Origins
This book came about as a result of looking around me at friends, family, clients, and people I pass in the street, and seeing more and more suffering. From my own personal experience know that:
Life does not have to be this way!
The suffering seems to manifest as any number of chronic or serious illnesses, or as anger, rage, fear, depression, grief, impatience, irritation, loneliness, remorse, sadness, addictions, or some other affliction. For many, life may seem pointless, stuck in a rut or simply a waste.
Humans have always carried the belief and the dream that we can better our lives and live permanently in a state of joy coloured by love, peace, acceptance and compassion. I sense this belief is being replaced with resignation for our lot in life, and what worries me most is that our culture is becoming to accept this as normal. Again from my own experience it does not have to be this way.
Details
I was a very unhealthy child, always ill, in and out of hospital, suffering from one chronic illness after another, depressed and in tremendous emotional pain. In my late twenties I reached rock bottom and decided that I had to take charge of my life. Using my skills as a scientist and engineer, I researched the solutions and some thirty years later I am the picture of radiant health. I live in a state of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing that I would never have believed possible all those years ago. Today in my mid sixties, at an age when people expect to experience illness in their lives, I have the best physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health I have ever had in my life. I have found true effortless peace of mind, and my life is full of meaning and purpose with joy in my heart.
In my professional life my gift was the ability to explain difficult concepts in practical and easy to understand terms. In writing this book I have collected all the combined wisdom that I personally gathered during my journey from ill health and misery to radiant wellbeing, into practical easy to use tools. Using these tools will transform your life, as I have done mine, and you can become the radiant being you have always wanted to be. Inge, my wife and partner, and I are living breathing walking examples of what is possible. (A reader sent me this email describing how and why my book worked for her and will work for you)
The changes demanded of you are simple and do not require that you throw everything up and totally change the way you live. I said the steps are simple but they are not necessarily easy. It requires understanding and commitment. It requires that you make better choices. If you are like many who have attempted to change and given up in despair, take heart now and know from Inge's and my experience that it is truly possible.
Basic Principles
Our overall wellbeing depends on our separate physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. However these four realms are interconnected and interdependent. For complete wellbeing all four need to be addressed simultaneously. Recent scientific research reveals how deep and important these dependencies are, especially illustrating how our emotional health directly affects our physical health. Any program designed to increase wellbeing must attend equally to the health of all four.
Physical Health
Have you ever wondered why we in the advanced western cultures are becoming increasingly unhealthy? Just one example: 50% of our population is overweight with 25% of those being clinically obese. A significant percentage of those are suffering from diabetes. Yet we are "fed" one low-carb diet after another that promises a solution. Still the problem persists and is getting worse. There are a number of contributory factors that result in in both weight gain and the the difficulty of losing weight. Unless all are tackled simultaneously, weight loss just does not happen, or if it does it is quickly reversed.
It has taken human beings 3.2 million years to evolve the bodies that we inhabit today. In the last 150 years, and especially in the last 50 years, we have completed overturned the diet that humans have eaten for almost ever. Is it any wonder that our health has deteriorated dramatically? In terms of weight, humans evolved to to be able to survive famines, and anything that makes your body think it might be starving will cause it to put on weigh to survive the coming famine which in our society never comes. This is rarely discussed in most books on diet, and it is this tendency that that must be addressed before weight loss will happen.
Those of you who carry excess weight are likely to suffer cardiovascular disease and many other degenerative ailments. The latest research gives us a clear understanding of what is needed and interestingly enough the solutions are relatively simple and not expensive.
For any illness, the accepted solution is to take prescription drugs to heal our ailments (including anti-depressants for emotional issues). Did you know that the third most common cause of death after cardiovascular disease and cancer is from prescription drugs? They are dangerous for your health. I just read the other day that one of the contributory causes to insulin resistance (usually involved in weight gain) and diabetes are many of the prescription and over the counter drugs we take for granted. These include tranquillizers (e.g. Valium and barbiturates) and the pain killer Tylenol (acetaminophen). Prescription drugs are mostly designed to make Big Pharma money, not improve your health. Discoveries that do not make money, but that can make enormous benefits to your health, are routinely ignored by the media and the medical profession alike.
Some changes that you can make in your life are very simply but have a profound affect on your health. Due to the oils you use in your diet, you body may be in an "inflamed state" which is a contributory factor to many degenerative diseases such as arthritis, allergies, cardiovascular problems, cancer, Alzheimer's disease etc. This inflammation can be eliminated by restoring the balance of your essential fatty acids to the ratio your body was designed to have. Healing the inflammation is brought about by simply changing the oils and fats that you use in food preparation.
In my book I cover many topics that contribute to your health. You need to be concerned with your digestive process for good assimilation, and your acid alkali balance to ensure a healthy immune systems. For example, those with healthy intestinal flora are seven times less likely to contract super bugs when going into hospital. This is seven times, not 70%! You need to take the right balance of supplements to help your healing process.
Research shows that flu injections won't protect you from flu but you are still advised to have them. Research shows that childhood vaccinations given to babies in their first year can damage their brains and immune systems for life.
You need appropriate exercise. The third most common debilitating ailment (not one which kills you) is musculoskeletal problems (back or joint pain, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, fractures and sarcopenia). These lead directly to a lack of wellbeing. Most of these problems can be healed with the appropriate exercise and the appropriate nutrition. For years I suffered from knee and shoulder problems and within a few weeks of discovering the right exercises they completely disappeared. For example, after knee surgery I was told that I would never be able to, for the rest of my life, walk on rough ground (such as a beach) without a brace. Today I love hiking, the steeper the trail the better and I don't need a brace. The right exercise is all I need.
The study of epigenetics illustrates the direct link between the content of our unconscious mind and our physical health. Research shows that being loved and having a supportive environment are more important to our overall health than nutrition. So to have physical wellbeing you must address the negative emotions stored in the unconscious. This is the direct scientific reason for the interconnectedness of the our emotional and physical realities
Mental Wellbeing.
How many of you have relatives or know of someone with Alzheimer's disease? Those of you that do know what a frightening prospect this is. A simple vitamin has been shown to cure this disease in mice and human trials are currently ongoing. Yes cure, not just ameliorate the problem. You would think that this discovery would be shouted from the rooftops. However no drug company will make any money from this discovery so there is no publicity. None.
When my stepson had a psychotic breakdown and ended up in hospital, as happens to one in five young people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five at least once in their lives, we cured him using the same vitamin. We had to fight the hospital system and sneak the supplements in to him without the hospital staff knowing what we were doing. After 3 months in hospital in a non-verbal very depressed state almost comatose state, within two weeks of taken the supplements, he showed marked signs of improvement. Today he is cured and leads a normal life without any anti psychosis medication, only vitamins.
Emotional Wellbeing.
Our culture takes for granted that it is normal to have emotional pain. Living with feelings such as anger, rage, fear, depression, grief, impatience, irritation, loneliness, remorse, sadness, inside us in a civilized world is very not outwardly acceptable. So you suppress and hide these emotions - you go into denial, meditate to find peace, etc. You find ways to cope, which often lead to further chronic illness or depression. You choose a new relationship instead of dealing with the one you have. This new relationship quickly takes on the appearance of the one you just left. Then you take anti-depressants and damage your body, which leads to further health problems. We see this with our clients at The Breathing School all the time. I know I was there for many years myself.
It is these negative emotions that are locked in our unconscious mind as children living in a civilized society that cause us our emotional pain. When these wounds are triggered by life's situations our negative emotions of anger, guilt, grief, remorse etc. are released, often dramatically and uncontrollably. There is no avoiding this reality. Our emotional wounds, by their very nature as described by Carl Jung, need expression. We facilitate this by attracting situations to ourselves by a process called projection. This is the true nature of the Law of Attraction as described in the movie the Secret. It is unavoidable and the nature of the human condition, and continues until we clear and heal these unconscious programs. As soon as they are healed, your unconscious wounds will no longer attract these situations to you. Only then you can use the Law of Attraction to attract positive experiences into your life.
Inge and I both discovered in our separate ways a simple and reliable technique that allows these unconscious programs to be released and healed. In my journey I was very lucky. When I became desperate some years ago I found a therapist who helped me heal much of the content of my unconscious. It was as if I had taken off a constricting suit of clothes I had been wearing all my life. This suit had constrained me to a life of pain and suffering. Taken off this "skin" allowed the more real me underneath to appear. In this process most of the negative tapes that ran almost continuously in my mind (fear, anger, self-reproach, etc.) simply disappeared. It was as if they had been taken from their racks and discarded never to appear again. Inge in her own way had a similar experience.
We have formulated the process that we both went through in dropping the negative emotions into a process called 'Breathe and Heal". This again is quite simple but not easy. In my book I teach what you have to do to heal yourself.
We are both walking examples that it is possible. For example, my Achilles heal was in relationships. Today I have the relationship with Inge that I could only have dreamed of, never expecting that in this lifetime I would actually experience it. This has only been possible because we both healed our unconscious wounds. The Breathe and Heal process will work for you in truly magical ways.
One of the problems you face in making changes to your emotional body is to reveal what you have hidden from yourself by the process of denial. What is hiding in the pockets of the suit of clothes that it is time for you to discard. I have created a number of exercises, such as the Transformational Matrix, to help you in this process, especially if you are doing the work alone.
Spiritual Wellbeing.
I used to think I was not spiritual. Even though I was a seeker and a meditator for many, many years and it gave me moments of bliss, I fully expected that those moments of bliss would coalesce to give me everlasting nirvana. It never happened and they were never more than fleeting.
We are spiritual beings having a human experience. What I have discovered is that all of us are truly spiritual beings having a human experience. It is the emotional "suit of clothes" that prevents our true radiance, that is hidden underneath, from shinning out. When we shed our old clothes we can find the joy and the everlasting bliss that has been covered for so long. Then we can lead a life of humility, compassion, love, ease and flow naturally. Living in this state takes no effort and costs nothing and imbues every moment of our lives.
